Test on a live site.

Layouts change, access routes move, and risk areas evolve as programmes progress. The lowest-risk way to respond is not to redesign upfront, but test alternatives in the conditions that expose weaknesses quickly.

In practice, this means deploying alternatives where diesel is already causing issues, comparing intervention and reliability across winter conditions, and using live performance data to inform wider decisions. 

Start small.

When scaled from a trial into standard practice, decarbonisation becomes incremental, not disruptive. Teams retain control, evidence builds, and decisions are based on what works in practice.
